Chesterfield’s 2026/27 League Two campaign began with a defeat on Saturday as Fleetwood Town emerged from the SMH Group Stadium as 1-0 victors.

That result meant The Spireites had fallen by the same scoreline to the same opponent as in the first round of the EFL Cup seven days prior, with Ched Evans again the man to get the decisive goal.

Evans’ 35th-minute strike, slightly more on the spectacular side than the one handed to him in the reverse meeting at Highbury Stadium, set up a similar dynamic as in that game and it was again one Paul Cook’s side struggled to navigate.

What makes that all the more frustrating for supporters is that prior to it there were some green shoots of optimism forming, particularly on the creative front.
