Chesterfield FC Women beat Barnsley Women's Football Club 1-0 at the Steel City Stadium in Sheffield yesterday to make a dream start to life in the FA Women's National League Division One Midlands. In a close game between two well-matched sides, Imogen Fowler's converted penalty in the 41st minute proved to be the difference.
The first half wasn't littered with clear-cut opportunities for either side but every notable chance was certainly created by the Spireites. After 18 minutes played, the spin of the ball as it bounced just outside the edge of Barnsley's penalty suddenly put the hosts in a very awkward position. In that moment, Sophie Marshall smartly teed up summer signing Ruby Shore but she couldn't quite capitalise and saw her effort steered wide of the target.
