Chesterfield finally begin their 2026/27 campaign on Saturday as their first competitive fixture comes in the form of a Carabao Cup first round trip to Fleetwood Town.
The Spireites start the new season tasked with putting to an end a long-running barren spell in this particular competition, one which has seen them fall at the first hurdle in each of their last 13 attempts.
Put alongside the six years in which they didn’t compete due to their non-league status, that means the Blues last secured an EFL Cup win all the way back in October 2006; a wait that will tick over the 20-year mark if they are unable to progress this weekend.
