Chesterfield’s encouraging recent run continued on Tuesday night as they collected two further points in the EFL Trophy via a penalty shoot-out victory over Port Vale.
The two teams banked a point apiece having been level at 1-1 after 90 minutes at the SMH Group Stadium as Spireites substitute Louie Marsh cancelled out Onel Hernández's opener, before the hosts went on to claim the additional bonus point on offer by triumphing 4-3 on spot-kicks.
Having also beaten a Manchester City U21 side 5-3 in their opening Northern Section Group D fixture last week, Paul Cook’s side now look well-placed to progress to the knockout stage of the competition (recently christened the Jersey Mike’s Trophy for sponsorship reasons) even with a derby day meeting at Mansfield Town still to come.
