Chesterfield’s barren run in the EFL Cup continued on Saturday with a 1-0 defeat at Fleetwood Town, meaning the 2006/07 season remains the most recent in which they progressed past the competition’s first round.
The Spireites found themselves behind via a rather self-inflicted goal 14 minutes in and, despite dominating much of what followed, including seeing a staggering 81% of the ball in the second half, Ched Evans’ strike would ultimately prove enough to settle the tie.
Having watched the previous campaign peter out via the same scoreline (with that pain even prolonged over two legs) in a play-off semi-final loss to Notts County, supporters could be understood if the dawn of the new term had only served to solidify familiar frustrations.
