Talking Points: Let's Hear It For Newport

Paul Fisher discusses the talking points following a dismal defeat for Chesterfield at Rodney Parade last Friday night.

The main problem from the big defeat to Newport County on Friday night was that Hayden Mullins, manager of the Exiles, had said: “We are a high energy, high press side.” So why was it that Chesterfield failed to adhere to the warnings that were laid bare in front of them?

Is it arrogance? Do the Spireites have only one way of playing and when faced with adversity, continue in that manner until the inevitable defeat comes after 90 minutes? There were some silly decisions made by some players, experienced and not so. Was this just a collective bad night?

Quite what Remeao Hutton was doing pushing over a Newport attacker outside the box which led to the opening goal, I’ll never know. It was something he just didn’t need to do. Things got worse as the game went on. Errors were made and the manager was sent off. Yes, the Spireites were denied a penalty and Newport avoided a sending off on the back of Matt Smith pulling off a save worthy of Gordon Banks. That may have changed the game. It was already 2-0 by then, and as we know, Chesterfield are poor at coming back from two goals down to salvage something from the game.
