Talking Points: Another EFL Cup First Round Exit For The Spireites

Chesterfield’s 2026/27 season got underway yesterday in the sun at Fleetwood as the EFL Cup got underway on a Saturday for a change. However, the Spireites were defeated 1-0 thanks to former player Ched Evans capitalising on a defensive error to grab the winner and send his ex-side crashing out at the first round stage for the 14th consecutive season in which they've entered the tournament.
Without further ado, let's take a look at the main talking points from yesterday's cup tie at Highbury Stadium:
Cup Run
Normally when you talk about a cup run, you mean the positives of getting to the latter stages of the competition and how much enjoyment you have had of knocking out sides above you in the pyramid. Think of Chesterfield's 1996/97 FA Cup run or even the EFL Cup run of 2006/07 - yes, think about that one in particular. Because that one was the last time Chesterfield actually won a game in the EFL Cup.
